- Intended to commemorate someone or something
This memorial was built to honor our 16th president, Abraham Lincoln. The monument began being built on the presidents birthday on 1911, and was completed March 30th, 1922. The memorial was dedicated by the president at the time, William Taft, and Lincoln's son Robert Todd Lincoln.
The memorial was designed by Henry Bacon, and is modeled after ancient Greek temples. Sitting between the North and South side of the memorial is a statue of Abraham Lincoln placed in a "thinking" position. This statue took four years to build and was designed by the Piccirilli brothers and sculpted by Daniel French.
Two years after Lincoln's death, the Congress formed the "Lincoln Monument Association". This group of people came together to start getting ready for the memorial. This group of people had important things to do in order to get ready for the memorial, such as to find a place for it to go and to raise money to fund the building of it. Overall the memorial took two million dollars to build.
The memorial is located in Washington, D.C. and is open seven days a week. There are Rangers on duty to answer questions from 8 o'clock in the morning to 9:30 at night, right before the memorial closes for the night at 9:45pm.
